Sports and leisure activities for the disabled has taken off a great deal over the years, used to be only archery when I was first injured way back in 1976 and that was only introduced as a way to get newly injured spinal cord injuries to build up their strength and balance. I tried it a few times but might as well tried hitting the moon Smile

Now we have numerous wheelchair sports basketball, netball, rugby, tennis as well as wheelchair dancing, fencing etc etc

The Paralympic Games has of course helped promote disabled sports and what used to be leisure activities a great deal. The games take place once every four years (with a Winter Games two years after each summer edition of the Games) in the same city and year as the Olympic Games.

Hobbies for the disabled have also taken off a great deal, as disability became accepted over the years, so did hobbies for the disabled, fishing, photography and even flying. I was reading the other day about blind sports and how blind cricket has taken off big time over the past few years, so go get involved, theres somthing for everybody.

Anybody interested in finding a new hobby, sport or leisure activity should find a local club, they are out there and will be very pleased to have you on board. Don’t worry about your ability level, it’s the taking part, having a laugh and socialising that makes it all worth while.

Many thanks for raising such an important aspect of hobbies and generating an interest in what can be a worthwhile social participation.

I often wonder how many clubs etc are actually out there, and also how to start in finding out their suitability for wheelchair users, in particular.
